ABOUT DEITATIS 

The Deitatis consort and players were founded to create a dynamic ensemble capable of facilitating the performance of music across the millennium and into the present day. As a choir, it draws on outstanding singers from across not only Oxford but the country and has a particular focus on music of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as a firm grounding in the music of the Baroque. As an instrumental force, it functions not only in support of the choir but independently, while always being comfortable working symbiotically with the choral forces.

Our upcoming projects across the year draw upon Oxford’s rich choral tradition, exploring examples of sacred work that sit beyond Evensong and utilising spaces and forces in dynamic ways. We are named after a Grand Motet by Lalande, and we explore lesser-known Baroque works with period instruments alongside more core repertoire by Bach and Handel, as well as utilising our players in more modern works.

 

Directed by Luke Mitchell, singers and instrumentalists from the group perform in a range of combinations, including a tour of intimate works by François Couperin and works for orchestral and choral forces by 20th-century British composers. Dynamism, immersion, and expression are at the core of our performance values, something we hope our audiences will fully experience at our concerts.
